I  like colourful umbrellas, as on a rainy day when many of them are fully opened they embellish any street. An image very similar to the one given by the traditional colourful koinobori, the Japanese flying carp, floating in the wind.

For my modern interpretation of the koinobori I chose Tyvek, a material used in high-tech industry for among other things protective foil for cars, printed military maps and children’s books. Shape and dimension of the original koinobori is only slightly altered.

The sides are cut by means of templates. Then, with a waterproof pen and in varying versions, the fish are painted in very reduced lines mirroring the waves of the water. When dried up, the sides are sewn together. And to keep the koinobori from flying away, inside the white ring, the fish’s mouth, a bowline knot fastens the PE-strings to the carbine which serves as a hook.
